Housing for the Homeless

Housing for the Homeless

The Yakima Housing Authority has partnered with several not-for-profit organizations and Yakima County’s Department of Human Services and Grant Management to provide housing and services to the homeless.  There are 75 vouchers throughout Yakima County specifically set aside for individuals and families who qualify as homeless.  In addition, each individual receives assistance with health care, substance abuse and job training.

In order to qualify as homeless you must meet the following definition:

  1. An individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence; and
  2. an individual who has a primary nighttime residence that is -
    • a supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations (including welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing for the mentally ill);
    • an institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized; or
    • a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
